WHY DO WE LOVE TO BE "AL FRESCO"?

Kelly Ager

The phrase al fresco is borrowed from Italian for "in the cool air", although it is not used in that language to refer to dining outside. Instead, Italians use the phrases fuori ("outside", "outdoor") or all'aperto ("in the open [air]")

When the term is used in the UK relative to dining or at a restaurant, it means to eat outside. Sometimes, you may see it alternatively spelled alfresco, and used in reference to open-air concerts or performances.

WHY DO WE LOVE TO EAT OUTSIDE?

Given the right conditions, people love to eat outside. The practice of eating outside has been associated with multiple health benefits, including stress relief and greater exposure to vitamin D. We all love a great picnic in the park or a garden bbq and here is no exception.

We know it’s been a long time coming and unlike much of the news these days, the reopening of hospitality bodes well for restaurants with outdoor dining spaces.

Being outside is social, it's fun, it's like being on holiday, like we've escaped the everyday and are doing something different. Let's face it, we could all do with a bit of that right now!

So enjoy some great food with fantastic company and relax and unwind, as you embrace the new dining experience that we can offer.

Spring is here, the desire to eat outdoors is getting stronger by the day. After months spent cooped up inside and abiding by lockdown restrictions, we are eager to get outside and craving our favourite meals out.
